Our Policy About Ads

lia-thumbYou’ve probably noticed that we have ads on Nourish Network. But you’ve hopefully also noticed that they’re a bit different than many of the other ads you see. We have deliberately decided to pass on the ad networks (I couldn’t bring myself to contribute to the flat belly ad glut) and developed what we call a “360 Degree Value Ad Program,” where in order for a company to partner with Nourish Network as an advertiser they must be authentically advancing the principles of sound nutrition or eco-clean eating and living.

The idea is, we don’t want our principles to go out the door as soon as they hit the sidebar. We want to use that space to connect you to goods and services that fit your values, interests and needs. Let me be clear; our advertisements are not endorsements. But because the companies are pre-screened, we can honestly say that you won’t ever see something being advertised here that we wouldn’t enthusiastically stock on our own shelves or be excited to tell our friends about.

There’s another reason we went a different route with advertising. We believe that companies both large and small play a role in changing status quo, and we wanted to make our advertising available–and affordable–to businesses of all sizes who do so. So you’ll see a mix of large national companies and small local ones all dedicated to making people’s lives a bit healthier, a bit calmer, a bit greener . . . a recipe we believe leads to sustainable change.

Will you sometimes see our advertisers covered in our editorial, or the subject of a profile end up as an advertiser? Probably. As a highly published writer and independent branding consultant over the past twelve years, I’ve experienced crossover several times. I’ve come to think of it as a natural overlap when you’re only writing about companies you’re passionate about and only working with companies you truly believe in.  Where ethics get compromised is when either one gets forced (or if there’s ever a lack of transparency). So if someone comes to us as an advertiser that has an incredible story we think you’d like to hear, you may end up reading about them (let me clear again, though; advertising in no way guarantees or even improves the odds that we’d cover a company . . . it’s just one avenue by which they might end up on our radar). And if, during the course of researching a story, we get into conversation with someone where it seems an ad would be a good fit, then you’ll likely see their logo up there in the sidebar.

If you ever feel like we’re in violation of this policy, please call it to our attention. If you’d like to advertise with us, click here.

Thanks for being a part of Nourish Network!
