That’s a great approach, Julie. I love the idea of fully engaging your other senses in the experience, rather than denying yourself altogether. A whole other way of enjoying!

I once gave up coffee for three months and would stroll by the aisle and just sniff. Although I have started having a cup nearly everyday, again, I have tried to do the same when craving donuts or candy or….. Just walk by the aisle, sniff and walk away. So far, it’s working.

In light of the bigger “yes,” I’m thinking those butter toffee peanuts won’t keep you down for too long. Congrats!!! Christopher had been on the road for our entire marriage (10 years and then some) up until two and a half years ago, and wasn’t thrilled about the prospect of traveling with a new baby (and new mommy!) at home. And then he got an offer from Cakebread (one of his clients at the time) a month before we brought Noemi home for a job that fit him perfectly . . . absolute divine timing. It’s been awesome having him home. He still chuckles that he can count how many times he’s been on a plane in the past 2-1/2 years on one hand–that used to be unthinkable!

Well, I said “yes” unfortunately to opening a can of butter toffee peanuts I bought from a local girl scout for stocking stuffers and Danny and I munched on them last night. Which said “no” to my daily calorie allowance. So of course saying “yes” messed me up and continues me on my plateau for weight loss. But my husband and I said “yes” to a recent job offer for him that will entail us giving up our logging business but keeping him home. It is a hard break – we’ve been in the woods for so long. But you simply cannot make money anymore but don’t get me started on that. The most important thing this will change is our 8 year old not falling apart every Sunday afternoon as Daddy heads back over to work and is gone all week. Kids need their parents to be around to feel safe. And boys about this age really need to hang with Daddy. Thanks for that recipe – I have two bags of frozen edamame!

I love it, Lyra! Now THAT is a positive attitude with a “no.”

I said no to the beautiful Yummy Dummy Dark Chocolate bars in my cupboard. Geez, they are so good, and wonderful young teen girls in Davis make them as part of grrl-powered businesses. They donate part of their profit to charity. But by saying no to actually EATING them now, I will have them here to give to family at Thanksgiving or stuff Christmas stockings with. And that’s really something coming from a nice Jewish girl who now enjoys the holiday with her in-laws. Heck, I can use them for Hannukah gelt!

This week’s Nibble to Noodle (http://nourishnetwork.com/2009/11/09/just-say-no/) is on saying mindfully saying no . . . have you ever found that saying no to something opened unexpected doors, or that saying yes to something prevented you from achieving something else? Share here.
